Quad Maker

What is Quad Maker?

Quad Maker is a set of very simple Blender mesh operations designed to help 3D modelers quickly retopologize objects into clean, quad-based geometry.

Inspired by Maya’s Quad Draw, Quad Maker offers Blender users a way to speed up their retopology workflow while maintaining flexibility within Blender’s existing toolset.

Read the documentation and see the getting started video.

The operations are:

  • Add Vertices: Quickly add point vertices.
  • Fill Quads: Fill the point vertices and surrounding geometry with quads.
  • Extend Borders: Extrude border edges and vertices either in single, loop or edge rings.
  • Quick Cut: Quickly use the simple loop cut and slide operation with single clicks.
  • Draw Quad Strip: Quickly draw out strips of quads on a target surface.
  • Smooth Vertices: Smooth out vertices in edit mode.
  • Delete Mode: Quickly delete vertices, edges and faces and dissolve interior edges in a single click/drag operation.

With a focus on speed and simplicity, Quad Maker brings together these essential retopology operations into a unified, hotkey-driven workspace tool, aiming for seamless integration with Blender’s native mesh editing tools.

Buyer Beware!

  • Check out the freely available Poly Quilt and the excellent Retopoflow add-on before deciding whether this add-on is for you.
  • The add-on is designed for simplicity and speed, so it may not be as feature-rich as other retopology tools.
  • Quad Maker should work well when retopologizing meshes with high poly counts but will not be suitable when editing high poly meshes themselves.
  • Busy scenes with lots of objects may slow the add-on down.

1.0.4

Added keyboard shortut handling to the Edit - Preferences - Add-ons - Quad Maker section.  Keyboard shortcuts should be changeable from here.

1.0.3

When Emulate 3 Button Mouse is selected in Blender, the SHIFT key will be used for Loop selection instead of the ALT key.  This aims to support the industry standard.

1.0.2

Disables Toggle Retopology Settings when Entering and Exiting the Tool in the preferences. By default  Retopology settings will remain when entering and exiting the tool.  This is based on user feedback that this was a smoother user experience.  The Preferences option remains for those who prefer for the retoplogy settings be reset when they are not using the tool.

1.0.1

Bug fix to prevent potential crashes in click-drag scenarios under circumstances when nothing is selected.
